Burrata is definitely an ingredient that is worth staying around. It can be seen on menus from local Italian joints to top Chicago seafood restaurants. Well what is it? Burrata meaning “buttery” is an elegant twist of its relative fresh mozzarella. Mozzarella and cream are blended into a velvety & supple filling, which is delicately wrapped in a soft outer shell of mozzarella. The uniqueness of this trendy ingredient is the texture. Once you break open the silky outer shell the spreadable fillings is a versatile ingredient that is enjoyed effortlessly. Burrata can be found at your local or specialty supermarket usually by the fresh mozzarella section.
Here are a couple simple serving suggestions!
Salad:
- Add chunks of fresh tomatoes and peaches to dish.
- Drop dollops of Burrata cheese throughout the fruit and veggie mix.
- Sprinkle with salt, pepper, & basil.
- Drizzle with aged balsamic vinegar.
- Enjoy by itself or with sliced crusty bread!
Pizza:
- Choose a fresh flatbread from your supermarket bread section.
- Heat oven to 450 degrees.
- Mix together in a bowl:
½ lemon, 1 cup artichoke hearts
8 oz. of burrata torn into chunks
½ cup of green olives coarsely chopped
3 tbls olive oil
1 tbls rosemary leaves
Salt & pepper to taste.
- Spread mixture evenly over flatbread and cook until cheese is melted and crust is toasted (8-10 mins).
Dessert:
- Carefully slice 8oz. of Burrata into 4 servings and plate.
- Dress each serving of cheese with a drizzle of honey and good balsamic vinegar.
- Top with an assortment of berries or fresh fruit.
- Enjoy with a dash of freshly ground pepper.
